Menopause Transition

« Back to Glossary Index

The official name for the time in midlife women’s lives starting when periods become irregular (either 7 days longer or shorter than expected) called “Early Menopause Transition” through the phase beginning with first skipped cycle called “Late Menopause Transition” until the “Final Menstrual Period” (which, however, cannot be called final until a year has passed). In this naming system that is called “Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop” (STRAW, both the original and 10+) the Final Menstrual Period is wrongly called “menopause” although, by the current accepted definition, menopause begins when a year has passed since the last flow. This last year is called the Late Perimenopause Phase.
