A type of ovulatory disturbance in which the luteal phase is shorter than normal and progesterone production is less than optimal. Shortening of the luteal phase is a common hypothalamic protective response to weight loss, stress, exercise training that is too intense or cognitive dietary restraint, the worry that what you eat will make you gain weight. Short luteal phase cycles are associated with infertility, bone loss and osteopenia.
