‘Citizen Science’ Long Before the Internet: Solving Problems Together

Before there was a Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulatory Research, there was a systems-thinking endocrinologist who was gaining a reputation as someone who was successfully helping women having a hard time conceiving, women who were having wild rides with their periods, and people who kept insisting there was a connection between how their lives were unfolding and how their bodies worked.

Dr. Jerilynn had the trust of so many patients that she was able to involve them in massive numbers to solve problems together, by tracking their data. This was citizen science long before the internet, and paired with Jerilynn’s scientific rigour, insightfulness, openness and curiosity it led to breakthroughs.

She shared this science as a leader in knowledge translation- again years before this was the norm. She wrote accessible books that put the insights and recommendations in easily followed “personal” narratives. And she founded the website www.cemcor.ca.

Through the CeMCOR website, Dr Jerilynn’s research, and the research of others who work with CeMCOR, continue to reach people around the world. It is providing scientifically grounded answers, nuance, and validating the experience of women and people who ovulate, or whose ovulation is ended. The life’s work for Dr. Jerilynn Prior has laid the foundation for future researchers, practitioners and citizen scientists.
